Before anything else, you should contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and check if there are any pending violations that need clearing. Checking your record track would give you an idea of how risky your driving could get. After you have checked your driving records, address all violations and penalties that need clearing. Make sure that you pay for all penalties and attend to any violations to clear off an unwanted driving record. After you have done this, ask for the issued certificate that will serve as proof of clearance. You can use this anytime an insurance company requests for proof or valid certification.

If any of these cannot be done to clean up your driving record, you can always ask for car insurance for high risk drivers. Many companies have this kind of insurance, although it would not come cheap and some would even require you to fill an SR-22 form before you can purchase a preferred policy. You can avail of this policy from insurance companies that specialize on this kind of car insurance but it will be at a high cost. However, there are things you can still do to lower your premiums:

  • Improve your driving skills. You can do this to get out of the high risk category.
  • Enroll at a driving school. Enrolling at driving schools will make you eligible for a driver’s discount simply by acquiring a certification on safety course in driving.
  • Before buying car insurance, consider the type of your vehicle. You could buy or switch to a low profile vehicle in order to lower your car insurance premiums.
  • Install safety features such as airbags and automatic seat belts that compensate for and eliminate risky situations.
  • Compare car insurance quotes and insurance companies that offer the best deals for high risk drivers. Do bargaining if possible.

You can always do something in order to lower your premiums. In every rule, there are exceptions, and you just have to know these in order to get discounts. You can cut car insurance costs by eliminating, or if unable to do so, reducing the risks.
