Reader’s Question:
Why do insurance providers consider me a high risk driver? I am a careful and responsible driver for 55 years. I never got a ticket, though I had an accident twice, at different times of my life, through no fault of my own. This is so unfair because high risk auto insurance costs more.

Remarkable, Jackson! 55 years of driving a car and not a ticket to your name? If it were up to me, I will give you a large discount. But really, it is the discretion of the insurance provider if they consider you a high risk driver or not. It is perception in some cases, but in reality, high risk auto insurance came about because of the drivers who committed traffic violations and got involved in accidents. These drivers that were simply reckless on the road – people who were a menace to others when they were driving.
Mature drivers, like you, might be considered as an “at risk” driver if you have some heath issues that could hamper your ability to drive and, potentially, cause accidents and harm others. This is where perception comes in. Some auto insurance companies, especially for drivers with proven good records, are given a break with discounts on their premium. Inquire with your current provider if they can give you one when you finish a course and get a certificate on safe driving for mature drivers. Like you said, you have been a careful driver all your life, so have yourself certified with that important fact and enjoy the rewards. The age to qualify varies from state to state. It could be as early as 55 years and stretch to 70 years old.
